Video Conversion

Video profiles are in, people, and we want to help you look as good as possible to potential Employers. That said, when you've got hundreds of thousands of Freelancers from dozens of countries, using a variety of approaches to video creation, how do you guarantee video quality to an Employer looking for Freelancers? There are a handful of video file types out there, but dozens of codecs. Choose the wrong video editor or compression method and your next potential Employer could be looking at a black screen and garbled audio. What can we do?

The answer: Convert all of that video brilliance into Flash.
Now, I could tell you that when you upload a video to Guru.com, Ff the Magical Mpeg Fairy sprinkles pixie dust on the file transforming it into a beautiful Flash Movie. But you web-savvy Freelancers know better. In fact, we're using the open-source library FFMPEG to make all uploaded videos viewable regardless of how they were created. We've even set up a server dedicated to converting video content. You hand us the video; we'll do the rest.

But please note that these conversions are not immediate! We'll need some time to get it right. So once you've uploaded your masterpiece, why not take a break? Go outside and get some fresh air. Maybe indulge in a little something from that bakery down the street. We won't tell!

Leave the video. Take the cannoli.

While you're out, we'll review your submission and add it to the queue for conversion. Once Ff is done with it, we'll post that information to your Images & Video Management screen and your video profile will be available for viewing.

See? That was simple.

As in life, however, there's a catch or two (or three).

Your video needs to be in one of a select group of file formats: Apple Quicktime (.mov), Windows Media (.avi, .wmv), Mpeg (.mpg, .mpeg, .mpe) or Shockwave Flash (.swf). If your video isn't in one of these formats, you'll need to convert it prior to upload. Bright side: any editing software worth its salt will have no problem saving your video as MPEG.

We're going to resize your video to 280px x 210px. If your aspect ratio doesn't match ours, we'll maintain your aspect ratio but resize the video to fit within a 280px x 210px space and cushion it with black background. If you're comfortable with your video editor, we suggest resizing it yourself to give you an idea how your video will look post-conversion.

In order to ensure Employers have a pleasant viewing experience, all video profiles must go through our in-house conversion process. "But I'm a videographer and would rather convert it myself," you say. Sorry, no exceptions! Not only does our process convert your file, it also adds basic functionality (such as volume control, playback features, etc.) we want to appear on all video profiles. The only way to guarantee consistency on this is to do it ourselves.

We want to make your video conversion as carefree as we can for you. If you have questions or concerns about the process, let us know!
