Selecting and Presenting Your Work Samples

Work Samples are a vital component of your profile, and may be crucial for certain skill categories. Some Employers may not even consider a profile without Work Samples when reviewing bids or searching for Freelancers, regardless of earnings or feedback. In order to maximize your opportunities, it is imperative to post relevant Work Samples to your profile.

Work Samples are divided into 5 sections:

Guru and Guru Vendor members have 100 MB (up to 100 files) of Work Sample storage at no extra charge. With this amount of space, you can easily post high quality video, sound, and graphic files that Employers want to see.

Basic members have 20 MB (up to 10 files) of Work Sample storage for free. This is a great opportunity to drive your business to the next level by sharing eye-catching Work Samples with Employers.

Please make sure that you have permission from your previous Employer before posting a Work Sample, and be respectful of any copyrights in place. Once the legal aspects have been taken care of, pick out your best work and post it at the top. Moreover, make sure that it displays properly after you upload it by clicking the provided link. You will then be able to view your profile as an Employer does.

Are you a Freelancer with many graphic file samples?

In the Work Sample space, all Graphic files can be no larger than a maximum width of 600 pixels and a maximum height of 400 pixels. We recommend that you crop or resize your graphic files to our specifications before uploading them to our system.

What is a thumbnail? Do thumbnails play an important role?

They sure do. A thumbnail file is a tiny image that acts as a "teaser" for an Employer to click and view your actual Work Sample. We automatically assign a default thumbnail to any Work Samples currently without one. You can choose to:
  1. Keep the default thumbnail.
  2. Have Guru.com auto-generate a thumbnail for you (graphic and video files only).
  3. Upload your own thumbnail file.
If you choose to upload your own thumbnail (kudos to you!), please keep these constraints in mind.
  • BMP, GIF, JPEG, JPG, or PNG files only
  • 48 x 48 pixels maximum (larger thumbnails will be resized proportionally)
  • Non-animated images only

What would I do if I were in your shoes?

I would get moving now! Today, I would perform inventory on what I have (or have not) uploaded in my Work Samples space. Read more on how to update Work Samples.

Final question:  What Work Samples will you upload and how will you present them to convince Employers of your talents and professionalism?
