Defining Your Work Terms

Wal-Mart sells, well, everything, and if I needed "something" I would think about going there to get it, but before I got in my car and drove all the way there, I would want to know a few things first. Hours of operation, what forms of payment they take, their return policy if I don't like my "something", and whether or not I could order that item from the comfort of my home online or by phone, would all impact my decision to buy there. Employers want to know the same kinds of things about you and your business before they purchase that "something" you're offering.

To address this need, your profiles include a free form Work Terms field for you to enter a general description of how you prefer to conduct business.

Though your preference for coding software while wearing a pink tutu should probably be left out, here are some suggestions on what to include in this space:How you prefer to be paid;
  • How you would like to communicate;
  • When you are available;
  • Your personal mission statement.
Though Visa claims to be accepted everywhere you want to be, it's not. True, it's accepted lots of places, but more often than not, you still need cash to get a slice of pizza or that shell necklace from the vendor on the beach. In the Work Terms section you can specify by which means you would prefer to be paid within our system. Though we highly recommend receiving your payments through SafePay to ensure a safe transaction, you can also use Guru Invoicing. Whether you choose SafePay or Invoicing you can ask that an Employer issue payment by check, e-check, wire transfer or cash account funds, PayPal, or credit card. 

Some stores are brick and mortar, others solely online and still others offer the whole array of actual buildings, online ordering, catalogs and phone options. Everyone has a different way in which they best like to communicate. What is yours? Do you want to talk by phone? Email? Or maybe instant messaging is the best way to get a hold of you. How many phone calls and emails will you entertain in a day? A week? What time of day is best for you? Do you have dinner with your family at six? Are you in bed by 10? This is a good time to establish how and when you want to be in touch.

Though Santa Claus may be on duty 24x7x365, you are probably not. You have the choice to not work weekends, New Year's Day, or after 6pm ET. If you work 9-5 M-F, put it here. If you don't work Wednesday's because you are taking classes or every other weekend is yours with the kids, this is where you would want to set that parameter.

The U.S. Postal Service guarantees that the mail will be delivered under any circumstance, quite the guarantee. This is a great place to let a potential Employer know that if it doesn't work, you'll fix it. You may also have a mission statement that guides your company or a personal statement of ethics that you abide by in all working relationships. Everyone wants to know who they're dealing with before they shake hands, so why not put it here?

The Work Terms area is an opportunity for you to give an Employer an idea of how you prefer to work. Work terms are not binding, and you can certainly amend them to suit a project if you so desire.
