Determining a Fair Price for Your Project

Determining a fair price for your project will increase the success of your project posting.  Projects that contain a price that is too high for the work to be completed can result in an unnecessary payout on your end.  On the other hand, projects that offer a low rate may result in poor applicant and work quality.

So, how can you find out what a fair price is for your project?

Freelance project payments are posted in two ways - hourly and project-based.  To find out which is best for you and what hourly or total amount you should offer, research is your best friend.  Below are some suggestions on how to source the information you need.
  • Use Guru.com tools to find Freelancers with completed projects that are similar to yours. Completed project information will be listed with their feedback. Filter search results by a budget range, and sort by amount paid. See Help Center information on Searching for Freelancers.

  • Call around to firms that offer the service you are seeking and check their prices. Just as you would call several plumbers to obtain a price estimate on a leaky toilet before coming to terms with an amount that works for you, you should do the same thing when searching for an independent Freelancer. Though you may not use these firms, they can provide you with valuable information.

  • Check with friends or colleagues who have had similar projects completed.  You may know someone who had a website or business plan completed within the last year or so.  Contact them, and see what they paid for the service.

  • Check with professional organizations that cater to the type of Freelancer you are seeking.  Many of them maintain cost statistics to help their members accurately gauge the going rate.
